May: Cannon Redesigns San Luis Obispo Intersection
May 20, 2007

Cannon Redesigns San Luis Obispo Intersection SAN LUIS OBISPO - The City of San Luis Obispo intends to design and construct the realignment of the intersection of Buena Vista & Garfield at Monterey. Cannon will provide landscape architecture, civil engineering, and surveying for this project. The scope of work includes an initial site analysis, design and preparation of construction documents, right-of-way easement identification and construction management.

This intersection of Buena Vista and Garfield at Monterey is highly visible to arriving visitors from the north as the main north end portal into the City San Luis Obispo. In addition, the existing intersection has been identified as a high collision rate intersection with limited pedestrian accessibility. Safety for pedestrians and bicyclists will be a priority in the design of this realignment. Potential design amenities include a well-lit walkway with monument signage, outdoor eating area and seating. The desire is to create a more park-like atmosphere where cyclists can stop and break, pedestrians can wait for the trolly, and visitors can exit the freeway to rest.

"This is a great project. We will build upon the character and spirit of the downtown area and create an elegant entrance to our City," said Mike Cannon, President of Cannon.

May: City of Paso Robles Awards Vine Street Project to Cannon
May 1, 2007

City of Paso Robles Awards Vine Street Project to Cannon The City of Paso Robles selected Cannon to design the ultimate improvements to South Vine Street, the southern entrance and exit path of the City. Cannon will provide the design options to create an elegant entrance to the City.

This project requires a collaboration of disciplines including landscape architecture, civil, survey, structural, and planning. The scope of work includes conceptual road improvement plans, a preliminary design report, exhibits, and an opinion of probable cost. The improvements include two-lanes, a multi-use trail on the West side, as well as curb, gutter, and sidewalk. The design options will incorporate the natural scenery and native vegetation and will include amenities such as an interpretive ‘wine theme' walk, a kiosk-rest area, benches/seating area, a picnic area, and a 2-mile multi-use pedestrian trail.

Steep slopes and the adjacent Highway 101 corridor make this roadway project complex. The design solution will require creativity to fit more roadway into the existing right-of-way and to determine how or where to widen the road.

"This project is more than just a road widening or bike path. The City has the opportunity to make a spectacular visual impact as well as create a landmark for the community." said Terry Lee, Senior Landscape Architect of Cannon.

Vine Street has everything for which the City of Paso Robles is known: rolling hills, majestic oak trees, and lovingly restored Victorian neighborhoods. In addition to being the southern entrance to the City, this corridor is an integral part of the community's thoroughfare.
