December: Cannon Receives CELSOC's 2007 Engeering Excellence Award
December 4, 2006

San Luis Obispo, California - Cannon receives recognition from CELSOC for providing engineering excellence on the Vapor Recovery System project for Macpherson Oil Company.

Cannon worked with Macpherson Oil Company to upgrade the Casing and Tank Vapor Recovery systems at the Round Mountain Oilfield in Kern County, California. The team successfully implemented a solution that met the stringent requirements for Title V of the Clean Air Act of 1990, while significantly decreasing the backpressure on oil producing wells, thereby increasing oil production. This project significantly improved the operational reliability of the compressor and enhanced the performance of the associated vapor recovery system resulting in a potential 500 barrels per day increase in oil production. Operational reliability of this system has also improved vapor recovery system compliance with emission control requirements mitigating potential for non-compliance violations and associated fines. Since its implementation, this project has improved the reliability of emissions control systems while helping increase field oil production.

CELSOC is a 50-year-old, nonprofit association of private consulting engineering and land surveying firms. Criteria in decision making included technical value to the engineering profession, original or innovative application of new or existing techniques, social and economic considerations, complexity, and meeting or exceeding owner/client needs.

October: Cannon Has the Power to Make a Difference
October 10, 2006

AVILA BEACH -Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) selected Cannon to provide consulting services for the ISFSI project; which provides safe storage of used nuclear fuel.

PG&E's Diablo Canyon Power Plant, located in San Luis Obispo County, provides electricity for more than 2 million Northern and Central Californians from its two 1,100 megawatt units. Since the beginning of commercial operation in 1985, Diablo Canyon has been one of the safest and most efficient nuclear power plants in the nation.

While Diablo Canyon was being designed and constructed (1970/80), the federal government was working to build a permanent national storage facility to handle the used fuel from all of the nation's nuclear power plants. Thirty years later, the federal government is still working on locating and designing that permanent site. Like many other utilities across the nation, PG&E must store Diablo Canyon's used nuclear fuel until a national storage site is open. PG&E believes dry storage of used fuel is the preferred option because it offers a longer-term storage solution pending the federal government's construction of a permanent national used fuel storage facility.

Cannon provided engineering, surveying, and permitting for facilitating the transport of 180-ton spent nuclear fuel rod casks from reactor building area to storage pad in the nearby canyon. The scope of work included road design, utility and drainage realignments, retaining walls, construction staking, permitting, coordination with San Luis Obispo County Building and Safety Division, and a fire water protection system for the ISFSI.

Diablo Canyon is the third nuclear power plant in California to construct an interim used fuel storage facility. San Onofre and Rancho Seco have already loaded fuel into their storage facilities. In the event a national repository for used nuclear fuel is not available this phased project would allow for onsite storage of all of the used fuel generated by the plant.

September: Cannon Knows the Drill
September 8, 2006

San Luis Obispo, CA - More than 50 engineering professionals attended the Trenchless Technology Seminar hosted by the San Luis Obispo Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers on August 24, 2006. The seminar covered Trenchless Pipeline, Manhole Rehabilitation, and Trenchless Installation of New/Replacement Pipeline. Through panel discussions, presentations, and project examples, the attendees learned about horizontal directional drilling, pipe bursting, open trench and jack and bore.

Larry Kraemer and Brien Vierra, of Cannon, discussed the Highway 135 Jack & Bore and the Templeton Interceptor Line Sewer Reach Project. The Highway 135 Project design included the use of a trenchless jack and bore technology. By using this technology, sandy soil and insufficient lay down area were not issues. In addition, the team was able to install a 24-inch steel casing with a 12-inch diameter waterline transmission main under Highway 135 without having to close down the highway. The Templeton Interceptor Line Sewer Reach Project involved replacing approximately two miles of aging 12-inch VCP sewer and increasing capacity for future expansion. The design included the use of a trenchless pipe bursting technology and helped prepare the City of Paso Robles for an ultimate build-out service area. The project consisted of over 10,000 lineal feet of new 18-inch to 22-inch sewer mains and a 2.2 MGD triple-pump sewer lift station.

June: Cannon Take Team Building to Extreme Levels
    Loose Cannons ‘Do the Dome'
    June 27, 2006

Cannon Take Team Building to Extreme Levels SAN LUIS OBISPO - Today's business place is fast-paced and busy. That's why the employees at Cannon (a.k.a. Loose Cannons) foster team building. In the past, the Loose Cannons have taken team building to a whole new level by participating in Mojave Death Race. This year, the group set their sights on hiking Half-Dome in Yosemite.

On June 10, 90 Loose Cannon friends, family and colleagues ventured to conquer the Dome. The hike to the summit of Half Dome was approximately 17 miles round trip; and can take anywhere from 10-12 hours. The route included the appropriately named ‘Mist Trail,' stemming from the spray of the waterfalls which soak hikers; continuing on to a series of steep switchbacks and then the infamous cables running the last quarter of a mile to the top of the Dome.

"Hiking Half-Dome was an amazing experience. Finishing the cables to the top and seeing the whole Loose Cannons group was incredible. This event was a great way to get to know colleagues, as well as their friends and family, outside of the office environment. The challenge really brought our group together. Associates from both our San Luis Obispo office and Bakersfield office made the trek," commented Liz Jaeger, Marketing Director at Cannon.

Cannon is an engineering, planning, and surveying firm with offices in San Luis Obispo and Bakersfield.
