CANNON TO DESIGN CAL POLY HOUSING
September: Local Company part of design team for latest Cal Poly Campus Housing project
September 1, 2005
SAN LUIS OBISPO - As design continues
on the largest single construction project in the CSU system history, local
engineering firm, Cannon is right in the middle of this historic
project. Cannon is working with Clark Construction and Niles Bolton
Architects to provide the civil engineering services for Cal Poly's Student
Housing North Complex. Construction on the project may begin as early as Spring
2006.
Cannon has been involved in numerous projects on the Cal Poly campus
including the most recent 800-unit Cerro Vista housing complex, the University
Sports Complex, EDES South, the Housing Administration Building, and
Engineering Building IV. "It's been fantastic for me as a Cal Poly graduate to
watch the campus grow and change over the years. It's even a bigger thrill to
actually be part of the team that makes those changes," remarks Mike Cannon,
President, Cannon.
When completed, the 2,700-unit housing complex will include three residential
neighborhood areas on 30 acres north of Brizzolara Creek on the Cal Poly
Campus. The complex includes two parking structures totaling 1,900 parking
spaces, commercial areas with retail and food service space as well as a
recreation center with a swimming pool. The apartment units will offer full
kitchens, laundry areas, study areas, utilities including high-speed internet
access, weekly cleaning service for kitchens and bathrooms, and trash
collection. If the popularity of the Cerro Vista complex is an indication,
student interest in living in the new housing project will be high when first
phase opens in 2008.

June: Annual Golf Tournament Hits a Hole in One for Area Teachers
$6,000 Gain for Santa Maria District Teachers and Classrooms

headed for green grass to raise funds local schools. This year, the Society of Petroleum
Engineers' Golf Tournament raised more than $6,000, bringing the total raised over the
past 20 years to $200,000 for Santa Maria area teachers and classrooms.
Each year proceeds from the Avila Beach tournament provide scholarships for teachers

plans for their classrooms. The SPE also sponsors an annual contest poster contest for
all 4th through 8th grade students in the Santa Maria School District. Funds from the
golf tournament go toward purchasing supplies for the classrooms of students with the
best poster design.
"The Annual SPE Golf Tournament is a great way for both our industry and our firm to
give back to our local community," said John Crews, Chairman of SPE's Santa Maria
Chapter and Cannon' Director of Mechanical Engineers.
This year's low gross winner was the team of D. Ewert, Trace Kine, Terry Geisler,
and M. Drown. The Low Net winning team included Rex Bein, Phil Daily, Paul Lorenzo
and Kurt Koerner. Mike Cannon of Cannon and past president of the Santa

June: Twelve Loose Cannons Returned From the Grip of the Mojave
Cannon' Relay Teams Succeeds in Mojave Death Race June 11
June 11, 2005
SAN LUIS OBISPO - Twelve "Loose Cannons" shot into the desert this past weekend
as part of the annual Mojave Death Race. Members of the Cannon'
"Loose Cannons" team ran and road over 280 miles through the Mojave Desert and
placed 2nd in the corporate division and 10th overall. Also braving the
elements were 20 fellow employees, family and friends who provided moral and
nutritional support throughout the 24-hour race.
For the past three years, the Loose Cannons have been participating in the
Mojave Death Race, which begins and ends in Primm, Nevada. The 280-mile race is
a relay with 21 legs ranging in distance from 6 miles to 42 miles of either
running or cycling. Teams of twelve not only brave temperature extremes ranging
from 30° to 120°, they also run or ride through soft desert sand, hard packed
dirt, rocks, gravel, and weathered asphalt.
"I can't even begin to say how proud I am to work with such a determined group
of individuals," said Mike Cannon, president of Cannon and member of
the Loose Cannons. "The teamwork and camaraderie shown throughout the race and
the weekend was phenomenal. We're already talking about next year."
"In order to complete a race like this, we need an extensive support team,"
Cannon adds. "We rely on our support system at the race, and those back home on
race weekend. Without our sponsors, we'd never make it into the desert and
back," he concludes. The Loose Cannons were sponsored by Arts Cyclery, Blazing
Blenders, Commworld of Bakersfield, Copeland Sports, Cowboy Cookie N' Grub,
Grant Construction, JCarroll, Magic Wireless, MG Sports Supplements, Nielsen
Benefits Group, Scarab Graphics Solutions, Total Financial Solutions, Wallace
& Smith, and Web Eclectics.

May: Central Coast Cannon Thunders to Top Award!
Wins Public Works Project of the Year for Thunderbird Waterline Wells
project
May 25, 2005
SAN LUIS OBISPO - The City of Paso Robles and Cannon received high
watermarks for the Thunderbird Wells Waterline project when they were honored
with Public Works Project of the Year award from the American Public Works
Association (APWA), Central Coast Chapter. The Thunderbird project involved
using an innovative and time saving drilling technique to cross an 800-foot
span of the Salinas River, an important consideration for a pipeline that
carries the majority of Paso Robles' drinking water.
In order to bring the Thunderbird Well Waterline across the Salinas River,
Cannon used the horizontal directional drilling (HDD) technique, a
low-impact method of installing pipelines across rivers. "HDD was the perfect
solution for this project," remarks Larry Kraemer, Project Manager. "There was
very little disturbance to the river, riverbank and surrounding environment. We
were also able to complete the project in three weeks," he adds. "Our
Mechanical Department has used this technology in the petroleum industry for
years; it is nice to be able to use this expertise for a project in the
municipal industry." Generally, a project of this scale would take several
months, which in itself can have an impact on the riverbank and surrounding
environment.
Typically, HDD begins from both sides of a riverbank. A drill rig will drill a
pilot hole under a river. Once the pilot hole reaches the other side, the hole
is enlarged through successive reams coming back through the tunnel. When hole
is large enough to fit pipes, they are also pulled through the hole following
the reamer.
The APWA is an international educational and professional association of public
agencies, private sector companies, and individuals dedicated to providing high
quality public works goods and services. Each year, they present awards to the
top local projects and engineering groups.
For nearly 30 years, Cannon has been providing engineering,
surveying, and planning services to clients throughout California, Hawaii,
Nevada, and Arizona. With offices located in San Luis Obispo and Bakersfield,
